Hiroshima- We have all learned about WW II and Hiroshima. Perhaps that
is why this is the most "must see" destination in Japan. Over
6 decades have gone by from the day, but many still suffer from the traumatic
incident. Historians and survivors have collected information on the bomb's
destruction and have preserved valuable information for public exposure
at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. Every year, people float lanterns
with prayers, thoughts, and messages of peace down the rivers in commemoration
of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. But that's not all the city offers;
visit Hiroshima Castle, Shukkein Garden, Fudoin and Mitaki Temple. Take
the streetcar over to the pier and the ferry to Miyajima (shrine island)
known as the sacred island. Itsukushima Shrine is famous because of the
large red wooden torii (gate), which stands in the ocean during high tide.
Miyajima has been regarded as one of the "Three Most Beautiful Spots"
of Japan, and as a part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park.
